The Midwest’s largest Brazilian Film Festival is back this November in Chicago

Chicago, IL — The 9th edition of MOSTRA, the largest Brazilian film festival in the Midwest, will take place in Chicago from November 2-16. Nine features and 12 short films will be shown at numerous venues across the Windy City, as well as at venues in West-Lafayette (IN) and Indianapolis (IN). All screenings are free, except for the opening and closing ceremonies, which are fundraising events.

This year’s MOSTRA will kick off November 2nd with the drama Just Like Our Parents (“Como Nossos Pais”), from director Laís Bodansky. The critically acclaimed movie premiered at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival in 2017 and was the most award-winning Brazilian movie last year. Just Like Our Parents, Bodansky’s fourth feature film, depicts the life of Rosa, a young woman who tries to overcome challenges as a daughter, a wife and a mother of two kids.

For the closing night, MOSTRA has selected the musical biopic Elis, which follows the short but intense life of one of Brazil’s greatest singers Elis Regina. Directed by Hugo Prata, the movie received awards for Best Film, Best Actress (Andreia Horta, as Elis), and Best Editing at Brazil’s prestigious Gramado Film Festival (2016).

Started in 2009, MOSTRA has been consistently increasing its audience — last year, more than 600 people attended screenings. According to Ariani Friedl, the festival’s director and organizer, the main purpose of MOSTRA is to present authentic expressions of Brazilian culture and history from some of the country’s best filmmakers.

“MOSTRA represents a fantastic opportunity for university students and movie aficionados alike to learn more about Brazil while enjoying great films. Many of these movies would not otherwise be screened in the U.S.,” Friedl said. “We have great filmmakers in Brazil and the movie industry is thriving, and we’re very happy to bring these great productions to Chicago for another successful year.”
