The Illinois-São Paulo Chapter hosts Talk Series in educational venues with a variety of guest speakers, including university professors, journalists and other specialists in Brazilian studies. The last talk was given by Prof. Ben Penglase, who presented his experience living and doing research in a favela in the north side of Rio de Janeiro, read part of his latest book Living with Insecurity in a Brazilian Favela: Urban Violence and Daily Life, and answered questions from the audience. The talk was moderated by Prof. Carmen Kordick (Roosevelt University). Prof. Penglase and Prof. Kordick were board members of our chapter.
