    Recorded in several municipalities in the interior of Maranhão, the documentary Aperreio portrays the interference of climatic changes in the lives of people through poetry and popular wisdom, it proposes a reflection on the current model of economic development and the consequences of the degradation acts practiced on behalf of this model.

    Located in the proximity of Cavalcante (GO), Vão das Almas is a community reminiscent of quilombola Kalunga word which in banto, means sacred place, of protection.  Guided by 10 years old Lizeni, they try to discover this place, as well as trying to preserve parts of an ancestral way of living.  A look into a history based on oral tradition, at the same time an attempt to elaborate strategies for change and the realization of dreams and future projects.

    De Catraia shows the lives which revolve around the Santos Catraias, telling the history from the point of view of the Catraia people.  With very little text, without intervention, through depositions and many images showing the comings and goings of the people through the eyes of the main protagonist and his work tool.

    The plot develops around a jailer who convinces his mother to take the risk to bring a cellular phone to the penitentiary.  This is nothing special sine this situation has been repeated throughout Brazil’s prisons by mothers, wives, lovers, etc.  What is special is the true reason why the cellular phones need to arrive to the prisoners’’ hands.

    Young Deisy (Ana Letícia) would like to live in the great city of Belém, but she lives in the Combu Island, on the other side of the river, isolated from the city which she looks from a distance.  Her mother (Dira Paes) knows about her daughters dreams and intends to help make them come through, but her husband (Adriano Barroso) does not like the idea.  Mother and daughter have a plan that they intend to put into practice.

    PARALELO 10 (PARALELL 10)

    Depicts a pioneer and risky work done in a small base Xinane, from FUNAE, close to Parallel 10 South, west of the Acre, on the frontier with Peru.  In simple installations, in the middle of the forest, the ‘sertanista’ Jose Carlos Meirelles takes forward the difficult mission to protect the isolated Indians of the region, counting with the help of anthropologist, Terri Aquino.  With very limited resources, the specialists develop tirelessly their tasks.  Besides accomplishing permanent negotiations with the people of the area, they also deal with the traffickers and others who try to invade the area.

    UM PASSAPORTE HÚNGARO (A HUNGARIAN PASSAPORT)

    A Brazilian film-maker who has been living in Paris for ten years decides to reclaim the Hungarian nationality, the Hungarian passport, her grandparents lost when they left.   She decides to research her distant Jewish-Hungarian origins, following the route her grandparents travelled from Budapest to Rio de Janeiro in 1937, but in the other direction.   Her own search for the past is interwoven with her grandmother’s version of the story, as she delves into Brazilian and Hungarian records and archives, finding long-buried treasures, and questions members of her family in Rio and Budapest. She decides to reclaim the Hungarian nationality, the Hungarian passport, her grandparents lost when they left. Both her official request and her search for political and historical truth raise fundamental questions about the concept of borders and the many-layers of cultural identity.

    Between 1965 and 1972, Brazil lived the so called Era of Festivals. Competitive music events were organized by the major TV studios where up and coming musicians performed to gain professional exposure and popularity in front of live audiences – who avidly cheered or booed as if at a final soccer game.   A Night in 67 is an invitation to relive one particular festival that changed Brazilian music and marked the explosion of the Tropicália music movement. That night, names like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes became idols.  With Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Roberto Carlos, Edu Lobo and Sérgio Ricardo.

    Film Descriptions-Genre Drama 

    BRÓDER
    90 Minutes, 2009

    This film of Jeferson De, which premiered in Berlin (OSO DE ORO), narrates the friendship between three young people from Capão Redondo, a suburb of São Paulo.  Macu (Caio Blat), Jaiminho (Jonathan Haagensen) and Pibe (Silvio Guindane).  They have been friends since childhood, but followed different paths as they grow up.  Jaiminho became a famous soccer player in Spain; Pibe lives with Claudia, has a son with her and works hard to pay the bills.  Macu, on the other hand enter the world of crime and is involved in the preparation of a kidnapping.  A surprise party organized by Macu’s mother brings the three friends together.  In the midst of the happiness for getting together again, the shadow of a world of crime threatens their friendship.

    CABRA-CEGA (THE BLIND GAME)

    Thiago (Leonardo Medeiros) and Rosa (Debora Duboc) are two young militants fighting against dictatorship, who dream of a social revolution in Brazil.  Thiago is wounded in a gun-fight with the police and is isolated in Pedro’s (Michel Bercovitch) home.  Pedro is an architect who sympathizes with their cause.  Thiago is the commander of an action group of a leftist organization, which has weakened and is currently studying a way to return to the political strife.  Rosa is the contact for Thiago with the world, now even more important as he is wounded.  In time, Pedro gets worried about their security adopting a strange behavior and having doubts that Thiago might be a traitor.

    ERA UMA VEZ (ONCE UPON A TIME IN RIO)

    The director behind Two Sons of Francisco, Brazil’s biggest box-office hit in Rio de Janeiro’s two-tiered society.  Situated just above the awe-inspiring Ipanema beach in Rio is the Cantagalo slum.  Every day, floods of Cantagalo residents make their way down the mountain, only to disappear into their surroundings as part of the invisible working-class that cleans apartments, works in restaurants, and sells food along the scenic, sun-drenched shores.  Young De (Thiago Martins) is just such a man.  De lives with his mother Bernadette (Cyria Coentro) in a cramped Cantagalo apartment, selling hot dogs on the beach in order to make the rent.  His brother Beto was killed when De was just a young boy, and his adopted brother Carlao (Rocco Pitanga) has been jailed for a robbery that he did not commit.  One day, while working on the beach, De meets Nina (Vitoria Frate).  Nina is the only child of a successful lawyer named Evandro (Paulo Cesar Grande), who is none too happy to discover that his daughter is dating a member of the lower class.  How is it that two people who live in such close proximity to one another can seem to be from different worlds?  As De and Nina’s romance intensifies, they both begin to realize that that society is dead set against them ever achieving any measure of true happiness together.  Ason Buchanan.  (from All Movie Guide.)

    Olga Benario (Camila Morgado) is a communist militant since her youth.  She is persecuted by the police and runs away to Moscow where she goes through military training.  She is assigned to accompany Carlos Prestes (Caco Ciocler) to Brazil to lead the communist intent of 1935 and falls in love with him during the trip.  With the failure of the revolution, Olga and Prestes are imprisoned. Seven months pregnant Olga is deported to Germany by the Getulio Vargas government and gives birth in prison to her daughter Anita Leocadia.  Separated from her daughter, Olga is sent to the Ravensbruck concentration camp.

    Three brothers, Orlando (Felipe Camargo), Claudio (Joao Miguel) and Leonardo (Caio Blat) Villas Boas, decide to exchange the comfort of life in the city for the adventure of the forest.  For this, they decide to enlist in the program of expansion of the central region of Brazil, promoted by the government.  With great power of persuasion and affinity with the inhabitants of the forest, the three became a reference in the relationships with the indigenous people, living incredible experiences.  One of their great accomplishments was the conquest of the Xingu National Park.
