The states of Sao Paulo and Illinois, and in particular Sao Paolo Capital and Illinois’ biggest City, Chicago, share a rich cultural diversity among its citizens. And while cultural diversity is key to dynamic growth in business and arts, relations among groups can also be trying as all try to grapple with histories of prejudice, racism and institutional inequities. During 2009 we have participated on the Media Committee of the Joint Action Plan to Eliminate Racism in US and Brazil (JAPER—founded and driven by the federal governments in the two countries. As JAPER continues to evolve and define its mission, so too will this committee explore programs and idea exchanges between North and South to work to bring awareness to inequality where it exists, and to improve dialogue among peoples of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
